Accountant steals agency cash leading to firm’s closure

An agent has told a court she was 'heartbroken' to discover her accountant had stolen cash from her business, which then had to fold.

Kendra Jacob - who now works with Martin & Co in Worksop, Nottinghamshire - had set up her own Pure Estate Agents in the town.

However one of her 20 staff - accountant Michael Twitty - stole £7,850 from the firm over a 12 month period in 2017 and 2018.

Jacob then felt obliged to close the business because she said: "I couldn't trust anybody anymore". She added: "When someone does that to you, it is devastating".

Twitty admitted stealing money from the company but could not recall the exact amount. His lawyer told the court of his debt problems - he owed around £13,000 as of late last year.

"He has now taken the steps he should have taken then and sought advice regarding that debt and set up a debt management programme" she told the court.

Judge Nigel Godsmark QC gave Twitty a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, with 100 hours of unpaid work.
