Labour changes shadow housing minister after just six months

Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer has promoted housing minister Lucy Powell to a more senior position after just six months.

This leaves the housing portfolio with Mike Amesbury - who was already a shadow housing spokesman - and Lisa Nandy, who is the new shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Powell moved into the shadow housing position in early May and made only a modest impression in her six months in the post.

Although she was critical of the government’s record on cladding, she had made few commitments on behalf of Labour on other housing issues.

Powell had also been criticised by some on the left of the party for being a landlord - she let out a room in her London property.

During her time as shadow housing minister Powell told the Labour Party conference: “I see no contradiction in us also promoting home-ownership – not for more landlords or second homes, but for ordinary working people – nurses, electricians, delivery drivers and care workers – currently priced out.”
