Estate agency pioneers ‘Covid-era’ benefits and perks package

London agency JOHNS&CO says the performance of its staff during the Coronavirus period has led it to launch what it regards as a pioneering package of benefits and perks.

These include:

- Enhanced Maternity, Paternity and Adoption cover: staff working at the firm for three or more years will enjoy 50 per cent pay for up to 39 weeks of maternity leave and/or adoption leave, whilst new fathers who have been with JOHNS&CO for 26 weeks or more will receive two weeks at full pay;

- Holiday Buy Back Policy: employees may take up to 10 additional days holiday paid during one calendar year;

- Wow Moments: each team is given a budget designed to go towards “creating fun, exciting and inspiring moments either for the team or for clients such as personalised moving-in gifts”;

- Birthday day off: for all staff;

- Volunteering Scheme: each employee is given two volunteering days a year with JOHNS&CO’s charity partner, Richard House Children’s Hospice;

- Christmas Shopping time off – staff are also given half a day’s paid leave during the festive season to shop.

The agency is also promoting a cycle to work policy, in line with many London agencies.

“We have always recognised that our staff are the cornerstone of this business, but lockdown and the ongoing pandemic has highlighted this more than ever. We wanted to introduce a benefits package that reflects our appreciation for the exceptional efforts the team continues to show” explains Clynton Nel, residential director at JOHNS&CO.

    As an employer I’d look at my staff retention and then think about what I could do to keep my staff. I love this idea. Something like a half day Christmas shopping costs nothing and is great! However I would also add in training, development and qualifications as retaining staff is also about continually developing them.

    Can we get some context here please - Johns & Co is owned by Ballymore, a construction conglomerate that is major player in the London new build market.

    Its not exactly a test case for estate agents given their wealth and backing.

    There's always one.

    Competitive market for quality people.
    Money doesn't always work

    Great ideas. Any interactions I've had with Johns&Co in the past have always been positive.

    Some positive and sensible moves here.

    Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but this is not a pioneering package, we were offering this to employees over 10 years ago as well as Christmas Gift vouchers to the value of £250 as a thank you for their commitment and hard work through the year. We also provided all expenses paid day trip on a loch cruise as well as their Christmas night fully paid with £20 each towards their drink for the evening. Trust me it does not mean that quality people are attracted or does it mean it’s enough to entice employees to stay. Still staff wanted and expected more. Money is always the motivator as is promotion.

    Bravo Johns&Co.
