Independent agency owner makes it to Sunday Times Rich List

Veteran estate agency owner Paul Rooney has again featured as the most wealthy individual agency owner in the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

Rooney, 72, owns Arun Estates, which is the largest independent agency group in south east England with more than 100 branches under different brand names.

“The Covid-19 lockdown has clipped £10m off the business” says the list, which was published yesterday.

However, Rooney and his family also have a £30m stake in Billinghurst-based house builder Thakeham Homes, which the newspaper describes as “fast growing.”

Rooney’s wealth is estimated at £163m which places him as joint 753rd in the list of 1,000 wealthiest people in Britain.

Meanwhile the Foxtons founder Jon Hunt - who sold the agency he helped create in 2007 for £375m - comes in at joint 111th with an estimated wealth of £1.3 billion, down from £1.4 billion a year ago.

Hunt now deals mostly in commercial properties.

Many other commercial property entrepreneurs continue to dominate much of the Rich List, although their wealth has been dented by the long-term decline of some retail property assets and now the Coronavirus outbreak.
