Agents Alert: Furlough scheme now extended until end of October

The Chancellor has announced that the furlough scheme is to be extended until the end of October.

He made the announcement in the House of Commons this lunchtime. Rishi Sunak says that until the end of July there will be no changes to the scheme, but it will take on "greater flexibility" in the later months.

From August to October the scheme will have greater flexibility and employers using it will be able to bring employees back part-time if they wish.

The scheme had been scheduled to finish at the end of June. So far numerous agencies including big corporates such as Foxtons, Countrywide and Purplebricks have taken advantage of the furlough system.

However, there is a twist - Sunak, in a series of tweets to accompany his Commons appearance, says: "We will ask employers to start sharing, with the government, the costs of paying people's salaries."

The Chancellor says further details on what this means will be released before the end of this month but he insists: "Workers will, through the combined efforts of government and employers, continue to receive the same level of support as they do now, at 80 per cent of their salary up to £2,500 [per month]."
