Removal firms cancel all bookings not already started

Advice to removal companies from their main trade body has put a stop to most transactions not already at a very late stage.

The British Association of Removers has told members to work only on those moves actually underway - others, including those booked but not started - should not take place.

Here’s the advice in full:

“The Member should only complete any moves that are underway and immediately cancel or postpone any move that has not yet started.

“It is evident that our collective and absolute priority now must be on ensuring the safety of the staff and customers of our Members, and of course their respective families, and so all parties must now make every immediate effort to remove the risk for mover and consumer alike at the very earliest opportunity.

“There will of course be many more questions asked and answers needing to be given over the next few days, but it is imperative that we react now to that very explicit instruction from the PM and we strongly encourage everyone to comply with the instructions issued by the PM, and the subsequent recommendation made by the BAR, and to keep safe and well.”

All seems sensible, but if you no longer own your old property having completed on it today and live in it, and you can not move into your new home. Are you if there is a mortgage involved with regard to your buyer and you on your forward purchase breaching the mortgagees conditions not to mention the legal transfer of the ownership of the property?

We are in a rental chain due to move at the beginning of May. I am in self isolation until June since the NHS placed me on the vulnerable list due to no auto immune system. No idea what the legal ramifications are re not moving on the agreed date.

If you have signed your tenancy agreement, you are bound to start paying rent from that day, under the unusual circumstances I would see if you can defer the start date.

Techincally a tenancy agreement needs to be signed by all parties, date binded and an engrossed copy circulated to all for it to be executed. Most agents dont do this, they just collect signatures and sit on them and send out nearer the move date.
