House sales slumped in 2018, early Land Registry figures suggest

A new analysis claims transaction numbers fell in 241 of 374 local authority areas of the UK last year.

Analysis of Land Registry data - which is two months in arrears -  suggests that among the 374 council patches only 133 saw an increase in homes sold over 2017.

Stevenage, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Cambridge were the places that saw the worst falls - Stevenage by no less than 27.5 per cent.

A total of 122 areas saw transactions fall by over 5.0 per cent while 41 local authorities witnessed sales drop by more than 10 per cent and 11 areas more than 15 per cent.

Greater London was badly hit - Tower Hamlets and Croydon transaction levels plummeted 22.5 per cent and 15.4 per cent respectively.

The best performing towns/cities outside London were broadly in the Midlands or the north of England, including Chorley (up 17 per cent on the 2017 figure), Hull (up 13.9 per cent) and Lincoln (which saw a 12.3 per cent increase).

The survey - using only preliminary Land Registry figures for the year - was for modular smart provider Project Etopia.
