New Housing Minister makes his first statement - all 93 words of it

The new housing minister, Kit Malthouse, has made his first formal statement from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

It came yesterday afternoon some 48 hours after being the appointment was made.

It was brief and gives no indication of progress on various detailed departmental issues currently thought to be under consideration such as the Tenants’ Fees Bill, reviewing options for a single ombudsman across agency and other aspects of housing, longer private rental sector tenancies, and wholesale reform of the buying and selling process.

The statement reads in full:

“I am delighted to be appointed as Minister of State for Housing.

“Building the homes this country needs is a top priority for this government. I am keen to build on the real progress that has been made and start working with the sector so we can deliver more homes, restore the dream of home ownership and build a housing market fit for the future.

“I’m also committed to continuing the important work of supporting those affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy and ensuring people are safe, and feel safe in their homes.”
