The game of musical chairs that has so often gone on with politicians in charge of housing continues today with the news that Housing Secretary of State Sajid Javid has been promoted to Home Secretary.
He has been replaced at Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government by James Brokenshire. Brokenshire was Northern Ireland secretary until he resigned in January because he was receiving medical treatment to remove a tumour on his lung; the surgery was successful and he has been recovering well, and has resumed political activities.
Pro-Brexiteer Dominic Raab remains in his position as Housing Minister.
Javid took over the Communities and Local Government brief in 2016; it was tweaked to include the word ‘Housing’ last year.
During his time in office he has been central to many high profile policy announcements concerning the agency industry.
He worked with Chancellor Phillip Hammond on the pledge to introduce some form of ban on letting agents’ fees levied on tenants in England - first announced some 18 months ago but yet to have become law or even have its detailed elements revealed.
He has also made high profile pledges of his own to make the house buying process more transparent, to introduce qualifications for estate agents, and to have one Ombudsman straddling all aspects of the housing industry - from agency to new build developers.
None of these policy announcements has yet become law
Javid’s new role as Home Secretary comes following the resignation of Amber Rudd last night.
