Buyers will pay 33% more for seafront properties

Properties located directly on the seafront attract a price premium of 33%, according to new research.

A study of 30 prime seaside locations, carried out by Jackson-Stops, found that all seafront homes were more expensive than comparable properties in the wider area by an average of 33%.

Aldeburgh in Suffolk commands the highest seafront premium at 89%, while the top three is made up by Padstow in Cornwall (70%) and Torquay in Devon (69%).

Other areas with impressive seafront premiums are Bournemouth in Dorset, Heswall in Cheshire and Southwold, also in Suffolk.

"Owning a sea-front home with uninterrupted waterside views or access to the beach has long been an aspiration for the British buyer," says Nick Leeming, Jackson-Stops' chairman.

“The lifestyle benefits associated with living by the seaside means that waterside homes will often generate a strong price premium, regardless of their distance from the beach."

"There is something very special about being able to look out of your kitchen window or step outside your front door and be immediately greeted by sandy beaches and the rippling of the tide," he adds.

Last week, Jackson-Stops announced a subtle rebrand which includes a name change and revamped website, boards and logo.

    Not a great analogy really. These places have more going on in their property markets than just their coastal location. If being on the seaside demanded a price premium places like Sunderland and Grimsby would be hotspots too.
