Manifesto wants new Land Value Tax and urges Right To Buy scrapped

The Green Party, one of the final political groups to launch their manifesto for the June 8 General Election, wants an end to what it calls “mass council house sales” and the scrapping of Right To Buy across the UK.

It is also calling for a trial of a Land Value Tax to encourage the use of empty land for new homes, and to stop land-banking by developers - which it describes as “speculation.”

The Greens are also calling for “a major programme to build affordable zero carbon homes, including 100,000 social rented homes each year by 2022.” It also gives a broad pledge to take action on empty homes, although without any specific suggestion as to what the action would look like.

The party, which currently has only one MP in the House of Commons, also has a raft of policies affecting the private rental sector.

These include a ban on letting agents’ fees charged to tenants, “a living rent for all through rent controls and more secure tenancies for private renters”, mandatory landlord licensing, the development of renters’ union “giving tenants a voice” and axing what it describes as “buy to let tax breaks.”
