Watchdog intervenes over agency and developer property descriptions

The Advertising Standards Authority has stepped in following two unrelated complaints - one was over an agent’s property description, and the other over the description of a new development from a housebuilder.

A property description from Beals agency serving Portsmouth and Southampton stated the home came with a parking space when in fact it did not. The ASA received a complaint from an individual, but when it contacted the agency it was told the property was no longer being markted.

“No further action was required and we considered the case closed on an informal basis” says a spokeswoman.

A separate complaint was made regarding the website of Strata Homes which featured a downloadable brochure stating: "Many of the 120 homes will back onto open countryside and there is a stream running along one side of the development".

The complainant, who understood the developer had previously been asked to remove the claim, objected that the website was still misleading as the claim had not been changed or removed.

Strata Homes told the ASA that there had been an oversight and the claim would be removed, and again the authority closed the case informally.
