Countrywide chief executive is top residential figure in 'property power list'

Countrywide’s chief executive, Alison Platt, has been named as one of the 50 most powerful people in Britain’s property industry by respected industry weekly Estates Gazette.

EG’s ‘Power List’ - based largely on industry activity within 2015 - puts Platt at number 21 in a list of “influencers, power players and innovators.” She is the highest-ranker figure from a largely-residential company.

The publication concentrates primarily on commercial property issues and the rest of the Power List reflects this, although it also includes individuals and political subjects which influence the property industry - so, for example, Home Secretary Theresa May features because of her championing of the introduction of Right To Rent immigration checks in the lettings sector.

Housing minister Brandon Lewis also features and is indirectly praised for “walking a tightrope between a government focused on home ownership and an industry wanting to invest billions in renting” as well as helping create the foundations for a more flexible planning system.

Perhaps controversially the magazine puts Brexit as number one, stating that “for the next 100 days or so the most powerful influence in the UK property industry will be branded by Brexit.”

Mrs Platt has led Countrywide to one of their biggest operating losses inside of a year, and appears to be spending money hand over fist to turn them "retail". Influential?? I wonder if Estates Gazette will see her like that in six months.

Well, you can still argue that she's influential and powerful without being successful. Countrywide are a big brand with big ambitions and big expansion plans. You can definitely question the direction they are heading in at the moment - and the levels of success they are currently having - but she's still one of the best-known and most influential figures in property regardless.

Having said that, with the merry-go-round that seems to operate at CW these days she probably won't still be with the company in six months time.
