New Trading Standards 'toolkit' to beef up policing of estate agents

A new ‘enforcement toolkit’ has been designed to assist local authority trading standards teams beef up its policing of local estate agents.

The toolkit, launched by the Powys-based National Trading Standards Estate Agency Team, provides step-by-step guidance on a range of enforcement activities which it says local council officers could undertake in monitoring compliance with the Estate Agents Act 1979.

These include directions on how to investigate and deal with agents which have not registered with an approved residential redress scheme and how to deal with an agent’s failure to display Energy Performance Certificate information.

The toolkit gives councils summaries of the relevant legislation, warning letter templates and ‘model’ penalty charge notices.

NTSEAT is now asking local council trading standards teams to comment, and says a copy of the toolkit will be available later today from the official website www.powys.gov.uk/estateagency.
