The new chair of trade body Homes for Scotland wants the Scottish Government to ‘evolve’ its Help to Buy shared equity scheme to stimulate the country’s housing market.
So far the scheme has generated an estimated 5,000 sales worth £1 billion.
Delivering his inaugural address to an audience of some 900 industry figures, Homes for Scotland chair Jim Mather called on the SNP-led Scottish administration to reveal what new support would exist for buyers and the industry from next March, when the current Help To Buy (Scotland) scheme comes to an end.
Mather says there is an urgent need for new homes of all tenures and is urging the Holyrood government to work with the industry “to avoid unintended negative consequences that could not only damage the industry’s ability to deliver much needed homes but also diminish the economic and social benefits that would otherwise accrue.”
Scottish housing minister Margaret Burgess says her government “is committed to see an increase in supply across all tenures, delivering a strong sustainable economy and supporting a fairer society.”
