Surveyors and solicitors are seen as the most credible sources of information when buying a property according to a poll conducted in the past week.

Public relations firm Edelman Berland polled 1,650 on Wednesday of last week - just after the Budget - giving them a choice of five sources of information which could be sought by buyers.

Surveyors were seen as credible by 57 per cent and solicitors by 41 per cent. The owner/vendor was seen as credible by 20 per cent, the estate agent by 12 per cent and - in the case of new homes - the developer scored 11 per cent.

The same survey showed strong public support for Help To Buy with 59 per cent backing it and 18 per cent against.

The poll also suggested that 38 per cent of the public felt a shortage of housing was the single biggest impact on house prices, followed by the rising population on 23 per cent and overseas buyers which scored 12 per cent - even though only central London has a large volume of purchasers from other countries.
