Just 65 per cent of homes in England are owner occupied according to latest data from the government.

The latest Survey of English Housing, annual research conducted by the Department of Communities and Local Government, says owner occupier homes total 14.3 million, while there are 4.0 million privately rented homes (18 per cent of the stock) and 3.7 million social rented homes (17 per cent).

As its title suggests, the survey looks at housing conditions. It says three per cent of English households are overcrowded - only one per cent in the owner occupied sector. Under-occupation, by contrast, is much more common in the owner occupied sector: 49 per cent of owner occupiers under-occupy their properties.

The good news for agents is that 61 per cent of private renters say they want to buy a property in future.

All the data looks at the financial year 2012-13; just over a decade ago, owner occupation in England was calculated to account for 69 per cent of the stock.
