Rightmove launches Facebook competition

Friday 7th October 2011

Rightmove has launched a Facebook contest to give home sellers and their agents a helping hand in the current market.

The ‘Seller of the Month’ app allows vendors to put forward their property on Rightmove’s Facebook page and describe what’s great about the home they are selling.

(The entries read a bit like Fine & Country’s and Fine’s advertising, where vendors describe their properties in such glowing terms that you wonder why, if it’s that good, they are selling up, and whether the reality is that it has damp rot, a pylon in the back garden and they’re divorcing.)

But we digress.

Facebook users can then review the list of entrants and vote for their favourite property.

At the end of each month, the eventual winner receives a bundle of Rightmove advertising products, including Featured Property, Premium Listing, Local Homepage and an exclusive email campaign for their agent to apply to their property.

Rightmove director Miles Shipside said: “In a market that is low on transactions with high levels of unsold stock, standing out on Rightmove can really make the difference in achieving sales success. ‘Seller of the Month’ will provide sellers and their agents with an extra place to promote their homes for sale, and each month give one lucky winning seller a massive online boost.

“Social media is becoming a key component of the property search process and can significantly extend the reach of a property to potential home-hunters.

“This competition is all about encouraging vendors and their agents to share and discuss their Rightmove property listings on social media channels as a simple means of gaining greater exposure.”

Dear Anon

I merely stated the results of a published poll, if the results offend you, tough they are fact. If you doubt the validity based on your feedback I doubt any of my clients would say to my face they hate me even if i provided poor service.

Now where did i say I personally hate Estate Agents, again fact. In my opinion many of you do a good job and I have friends in the profession. I have no reason to spread propaganda.

Now on to your statement that i am gullible and believe everything I read in the press, for the record my opinion is that much of what is written in the press is quoted from vested interests, however, this poll was commisioned by Horlicks not a newspaper and hardly a vested interest.

Added by on 2011-10-11 13:27:26

Unhappy Chappy, the only reason people read these polls is because they sell papers.

I, nor anybody I know has ever been asked by a company whether they hate an estate agent. I could ask every one of my vendors and I doubt any of them would say they "hate" estate agents. Some of us (a lot) do a very good job.

Just because you are gullible and believe everything you read in the press, doesn't mean everybody else does. The main reason people "hate" estate agents is because they are told to by the press and then idiots like you think you're clever when you spread the propaganda and tell all your friends.

If you are going to accuse people of not putting forward intellectual conversation, please take your own advice.

As i thought.....no substance or intellect and a whole lot of bactracking you cant argue with facts mate.

Ha!!!! ha!!! Slappy perfect reply, does sadly show I was spot on, I am sorry for you and will not mention it again, try to move on mate, life is worth it.

Concerned - Thank you for your respone, If you would care to get into a slightly intelligent conversation (instead of behaving like child) would you care to point out which part of my post is twaddle?

Now on to the next bit why would i want to kill myself?
As I agree, I do have people that care for me and also people that I love very dearly. In fact I love my life and wouldnt swap places with anyone else.

I am not an Agent basher but the arguments in the last post are very weak

- Terrible grammar
- Shocking photos
- Blatant misdescriptions
RM have the resources to hire an army of freelance copywriters and photographers with more ability than many in the EA's around the country

- Overpriced property
- Nothing selling
Ahem have you not read any othert articles on this site

"Therefore, I don't think it would be long before their credibility and reputation is severely damaged"

In a recent survey (see daily mail online today) Estate agents were the third most hated profession in the Uk coming just below Traffic Wardens and Bouncers. So i guess they would really have to mess up to do any worse in the opinion polls!
Added by on 2011-10-08 10:47:48

** Blantant misdescriptions abuse

(which for a company like rightmove would be most damaging)
Added by Private sellers is suicide for rightmove on 2011-10-08 10:46:52

Despite what many of the agents here think, I see several problems for rightmove advertising straight to the public. Selling houses is not like selling cars. It would only be a matter of weeks before rightmoves entire stock comprised of:

- Terrible grammar
- Shocking photos
- Blatant misde
- Overpriced property
- Nothing selling

(and to all the people that are going to slag off estate agents saying we do all these things, please don't bother to comment, we already know you have nothing better to do with your time, there are plenty of those that take pride in what they do)

Therefore, I don't think it would be long before their credibility and reputation is severely damaged, greatly reducing the number of people that would want to advertise on the site. They run the risk of losing millions of £££'s in guaranteed revenue from every estate agent that advertises on the site. I do not think it would be a wise business move.

Also, when talking to my vendors, the reason they decide to use an estate agent is not because they advertise on rightmove, it is because (most) agents will take on what can be a very complicated process as people do not have the time or experience to be dealing with arranginh viewings, chasing for feedback, sending out details to registered applicants on a well managed mailing list and everything else that is involved with selling property.

If there is a huge swing towards people buying and selling privately, I think it would be a very short lived one and people would soon come to appreciate what a good estate agent can do.

Rightmove are killing you, and you cant see it.

Rightmove are slowly, slowly inching every single agent to the cliff edge. This will be both the corporates and independents, we will all suffer at their clammy hands. When at the edge, they will push all the agents they can over the edge. We will no longer be customers, we will be competitors. The path to the cliff edge will be twisting and turning, little steps by Rightmove, hardly noticeable, but we are on the way. Most agents will not notice the impending doom. The short term, short sightedness of Estate Agents is a tool to be used against us and exploited. I have seen on this very site the agents who come here and extol the 'absolute brilliance' of the Rightmove proposition, no matter the high fees. This is exactly what they want from those Agents, it keeps the questioning agents in line, makes us think we are the only ones who see the danger and scare us into the belief we will be broke, penniless and forgotten if we stop using the Goliath.

I heard it said so may times by so many agents that if Rightmove EVER advertised a VENDOR property DIRECTLY the account would be closed immediately. Rightmove are not Silly Billy's, they wouldn't jump in and try to take the Agency world over by advertising for private buyers while still trying to fleece agents. They must do this by stealth, they need to build a customer base. Here it is, it has started. In fact, it was started long ago.

Rightmove have all of that data, all of those customer email addresses, all the customer postal addresses and names.... and phone numbers...They have it all.

Someone once said if Rightmove do not become the Ebay of property in the future from the position they are in now it would be a travesty. Yes for them, but not for us.

The reason they get the hits they get is because they advertise Estate Agents stock. They charge Estate Agents a small fortune to advertise the stock then capture all the incoming data for future electronic campaigns. They will have developed the software and contacts to cut out the 'Middle Man' (agent). It just has to be their ultimate long term goal and strategy, no other strategy would make sense to an IT company. Autotrader did it to their customer base (Car Dealers)..

The only way to stop them is to remove your stock NOW!

Make them go blank.

The public will stop clicking them...

If another portal goes the same way, Agents need to be big enough and wise enough to pull the plug on them too.

The portals exist on Estate Agents stock. Allow this to happen, allow Rightmove to develop this way with YOUR stock and they will get rid of you in the end. Maybe not this year, but YOU WILL BE GONE............... ACT NOW.

Resistance is futile.

RM is a bit like The Borg - I actually watched an episode the other day Star Trek TNG - go Jean-Luc.

It is inevitable that someone will come up with an eBay for properties.

RM would be mad to let it be someone else.

Think Sony Walkman and Apple iPod.

Sony had a massive lead in personal entertainment and because they rested on their laurels an upstart nicked their whole market.

If RM are clever, they have already designed the system and are just waiting for a launch date.

Look at the second comp entrant looks like a genuine vendor....how many of those are around? I wonder what she considers a reasonable offer though!

RM Management Mantra.

The more crap Agents put up with, the more crap Agents are going to get.

RM are slowly teaching us IRONY - similar to that which my Mother taunted me with when I was a kiddie.

"Keep crying and I'll give you something to cry about."

My RM Rep told me they are planning the next price increase after the one we are getting now for early next year.

Happy days

"I was worried your Caps Lock key might be broken after you told us you spilt coffee on the keyboard..."

B*GGER!!! You made me do it again, rant!! ;o)

Anyway - about these twigs. Do they need to be a particular length? Girth? Straight or bent (or does that depend upon the household perhaps...)? Should they be from sustainable forests?

You should produce a fact sheet. That will kill two birds with one stone, as not only will you be aiding homesellers across the nation (I know it goes against the grain and all but we all make sacrifices, mate... ;o) ) AND it will keep you out of mischief and therefore keep FBA happy!!

(Anyone notice that he's being very serious today... so far...)

DEPOSIT?? Haway, rant - the way you HPCers think/hope/pray, the cost of your next mop crop would get you a five bedroomed mansionette BOUGHT OUTRIGHT!! ;o)

(note the caps, matey - I'm clearly in raptures!! Don't use caps lock, though - I'm a 'shift' key kinda guy, actually... ;o) )

Added by rantnrave on 2011-10-07 09:38:15

It was a mocking comment left by a HPCer on a Rightmove forum that RM have used in their marketing campaign...

I at least found that mildly ironic.

Have pencilled in the hair dryer game for this weekend. Unlike PeeBee and Wardy, I still need a hairdryer...

Carefull what you say. I notice rightmove are new EAT advertisers.
Added by AceofSpades on 2011-10-07 09:28:46

Come on guys, It's a nice touch.

Rant - I've not come across one seller who has painted their walls, raked away all the leaves, put a new mirror up, or dare i say it, added twigs in a vase and then genuinely thought their house would be worth more.

It's a bit of a lame joke. It's mainly snowballed on your site because its a dig at the owners that your lot wish to be. Quite a picky, silly joke that is no way near as funny as you like to think it is - is it a moral boost perhaps?

Any way, 'jokes' like that make me grateful that FBA posts on here - much funnier.

How did you hair dryer game go?
