House purchase mortgage approvals by high street banks last month were 37,278 – up from 36,290 in May.

Although below the 38,300 figure which had been forecast by analysts, total mortgage approvals were 33% higher than last year.

The average approval value for house purchase was £160,100, up from £153,000 a year ago.

Remortgaging approvals decreased slightly, down from 20,670 in May to 20,478.

The figures are from the British Bankers Association.
