Dragon James Caan looking for estate agency's next big hitter

Monday 18th March 2013

So, who will be the next Jon Hunt of the estate agency world? And is he (or she) already out there?

Hunt was the man who famously sold Foxtons – founded as a single office estate agent – for £390m at the height of the market.

Will there be anyone else like him?

According to a diary snippet in the Telegraph, former Dragon James Caan may have already sniffed one out.

According to his “real estate lieutenant” (honestly, you couldn’t make this up) Faisal Butt, they are eyeing up an estate agent with a “disruptive” business model for the pair’s next venture capital swoop. It appears that they are looking for a further 12 agency businesses to invest in over the next three years.

Caan’s venture capital property wing, Hamilton Bradshaw Real Estate, is said to have already invested in a number of partners, including London interior design business Accouter.

The article slightly defies translation, but we think you’ll get the gist. It’s about money.

Quick reminder before you join the queue: James Caan also invested in Aaron Turner’s look4aproperty.

Seems that Mr Butt already has his own ideas about agency........ http://companycheck.co.uk/company/08361144#people-tab
and it looks like Jason Tebb of Your Move and Chesterton fame is running it..... https://twitter.com/jasontebb
Call me cynical but couldnt this story just be a way of getting a bit of PR for this start up?

Other than his occasional posts on LAT I have not heard much of Robert in a couple of years. There is no indication of who he is working for or what he is up to. Linked in suggests he is doing something for Radar but as that isn’t going to be the big money project alluded to in the post below, would those who know care to share or is it subject to NDA?
From experience it likely won't be the latter, as he says "if an NDA is needed you are probably dealing with the wrong people"

What gives?

There are only a very few people who are privy to what Robert is up to and I got the impression he wanted to keep it that way till he finds a Company or Individual with enough clout and foresight to make the project a success.

I certainly agree that the cash Caan has or can access would be useful and given what Robert knows about the industry and his track record of success that could be a very influential pairing

So essentially we are being told that our business models suck and so for that reason "I'm out!"

Mr Caan should be talking to Mr May based on the figures he has been shouting about here. The £390m sale of Foxtons pails into insignificance based on May's assumptions. If he wants to put money back in the hands of the majority of agents and NOT just one super shiny London agent then shouldn't we all sit up and listen?

Sounds like you know someone or something!

I have to say your analysis of this new Celeb venture into Agency is about right. One wonders why he didn't go for that "gay bloke on channel 4", Kirsty or "Ever Preggers" (Beeny)

Well the good news is there are plenty of empty shops to fill up with shiny new Estate Agencies in a manner "disruptive" to all existing agents OR Mr Caan could consider doing something far more constructive.

Let me guess that this big hitter will reside in London and the London housing bubble will fuel the success; so those outside of prime central London need not apply.

Perhaps though Mr Caan could look further afield than the next glass fronted agency and put his money and influence to better use. Throwing another brand of Estate Agency into the mix doesn't fix the housing market up and down the country, but at least Mr Caan will do well from it.

Your next big hitter Mr Caan should not be someone who wants to be the biggest and brashest Estate Agent, but someone who can capitalise on the vast resource of all that is good in the industry. The potential is vast if you know where to look... or know someone who does.

Faisal Butt? never heard of him and not on LinkedIn, anyone know about him?
I can think of at least one "Levi Roots" who could give Mr a Caan a good return on is venture capital.
