More than 25 MPs have so far signed an Early Day Motion calling for the private rented sector to be fully regulated.

They include Andrew George (Lib Dem), and Labour MPs Glenda Jackson and Dennis Skinner.

The motion was proposed by Andrew Love (Labour) and reads: “That this House notes with concern the Government’s decision to abandon plans for a national register of landlords and further regulation of the private rented sector; recognises that the private rented sector plays a significant role in supporting the housing market in the UK; believes that rogue landlords and letting agents continue to pose a threat to consumers in the private rented sector; further notes the statistic from the Office of Fair Trading that the number of complaints against rogue landlords and letting agents is on the rise; and calls on the Government to bring forward proposals immediately to create a national register of landlords and to propose further regulation of landlords and letting agents in the private rented sector.”

Could it be that ARLA and any of these trade bodies could benefit financially by regulation of letting agents - who wouldn't like an extra 10,000 or so members paying an extra £250 or so per year subs - sounds like the main benefit of regulation will be the trade bodies - wouldn't it be better simply for the Government to produce legislation or a code of conduct that all traders in the sector have to adhere to - there might just be people out there who don't want to join ARLA or any other trade body for that matter - why should they be forced to do so. There must be a hugh amount of letting agents of the highest integrity who don't need to comply with a code of conduct because they comply with their own high standards anyway.

Notice how there are never any plans to keep a register of rogue tenants - bye bye New Labour and your "if it moves regulate it" approach- not missed I have to say

    Just so Ray.

I note this is old labour, anyone got a gun?

Are there not more pressing agendas for an "early day motion" than this for politicians to be concerned with? Just shows their priorities are more important than the countries.

Is there not more than eneough 'regulations' in the residential property industry already?
ARLA should not support more - they should push and rigorously regulate properly their own organisation, including the standing of the landlords their members
act for. (At no extra cost and less flogging more and more 'seminars' and additional 'courses'!)
