Rogue landlords would continue to operate outside the law despite the introduction of a mandatory register, a new national taskforce for the private rented sector has heard.

The ‘taskforce’ has had its first meeting to discuss the proposed national register of landlords.

At the meeting, there was concern about the requirement for names, dates or birth and property addresses to be shown on the register.

The issue as to whether the register should be directly linked to enforcement action against landlords was also raised. The register would be mandatory and landlords would be issued with a registration number.

Any breaches committed by landlords would also be on the register and landlords might be required to observe a code of practice and join the Housing Ombudsman.

But, the meeting heard, some landlords might refuse to join the register, might operate under false names, or simply choose to operate outside the law.

Convened by Communities and Local Government, the meeting was attended by representatives of various organisations, including charities Shelter and Crisis, the National Union of Students, National Landlords Association, Residential Landlords Association and RICS.

The NAEA, ARLA, NALS and Property Ombudsman were not listed as attending.

    The nanny state continues unabated I see.
    If I have a property and I choose to let someone live in it for a monthly fee, what the hell has it got to do with anyone else and why should I be forced to give my details! If the gas boiler blows up because it hasn't been serviced in accordance with the law, I should expect to go to jail, which should be incentive enough. We live in the most heavily regulated country on the planet, so when do we as citizens turn round to the nanny state and say enough is enough! I'd give a false name too if it meant that my personal details weren't added to another list for the governement to lose! Earlier this year, we had to pay £100 to add our name on an anti-money-laundering register! What the hell for and why did we have to pay? This countries gone mad!

    We are slowly registering properties, so now its all Landlords, so why not tenants...then anyone thashing a place or not paying/passing ove the rent can end up in Council property.
