Agents slow to take up free portals
Monday 10th November 2008A straw poll of 35 agents has shown that over half have not signed up to list their properties free on Globrix, while a significant number are undecided whether to use Propertylive, the free portal launched by their own professional body, the National Federation of Property Professionals.
The poll was carried out in the second half of September by Charlie Wright, of estate agency supplier The Bu2iness. While numbers were very small, the sample quality was high, with virtually all at top level in their firms and belonging to a professional body.
Of those who took part, 82.8% were members of NFOPP, which encompasses the NAEA and ARLA, and 17.2% belonged to the RICS.
When asked if they had registered free with Globrix, only 12 of the sample had done so. Asked if they would be uploading their properties to PropertyLive, 13 replied ‘yes’, six said ‘no, and 15 said they had not made up their minds (one respondent did not answer the question).
The survey asked a number of questions about estate agents and their relationship with technology and the internet.
The agents felt their use of technology is important in helping them survive the downturn – 44% saw it as significant, 14% as very important and 26% as absolutely essential – while around 14% thought it either irrelevant or of minor importance.
They also largely felt more agents would be running their businesses from home in the future: 56% agreed with this, leaving 26% in disagreement and 18% unsure.
Asked which property portals they currently pay to list their properties, Rightmove came top with 24, followed equally by Primelocation and FindaProperty with 19 subscribers each, Propertyfinder with 16, and Fish4 with just nine.
