Globrix chief says pay-to-list portals have had their day
Monday 13th October 2008With mounting market pressure on all the portals, and the National Association of Estate Agents’ PropertyLive due to be unveiled tomorrow, free website Globrix has upped the attack.
Daniel Lee, chief executive of Globrix, spoke out after last Friday’s update on the Estate Agent Today survey which showed that 75% of agents have signalled their intention to quit Rightmove.
Lee said: “Agents have clearly had enough of Rightmove calling the shots, and now that there is a viable alternative in Globrix, they are moving towards it en masse.
“This survey shows that in just nine months Globrix has made a huge impression on the property portal market. Agents are clearly fed up with paying to simply list on a website and are looking for better value from their online marketing spend.
“The survey also shows that simply being free to list is not enough – you need to have a solid technology and a marketing plan to give a serious alternative to the legacy portals. We have seen in the USA that pay-to-list portals are slowly being usurped by free-to-list models and it is clear that the UK will soon follow suit.
“Globrix will soon release its statistics package, giving agents access to market statistics from the largest property search database in the UK and thereby giving them an alternative to RightmovePlus for a fraction of the cost.”
While it is far from clear whether agents really will carry out their threat to leave Rightmove, or whether they are bluffing, Globrix has certainly picked up speed quickly.
“We launched only in January and are the fastest growing website ever,” said Lee. He said Globrix now lists 960,000 properties from 5,500 agents, and while it offers free listings, it has 600 agents paying to promote their properties. Globrix takes its properties directly from agents’ sites and Lee said that only one had blocked this.
But he claimed that about 200 agents whose sites are hosted by FindaProperty and Rightmove are not able to have their properties automatically uploaded to Globrix. He said he found it hard to believe that his competitors would wish to stop their own clients from having a free listing on Globrix.
Lee also said Globrix, which is backed by News International, had taken four people two years to develop and that it had seen £2m worth of marketing spend.

Get Profile | Every estate agent I speak to are fed up with high internet costs. But, portals have to make money, they are businesses. It's the amount of money they make is the issue.
Take a look at www.hunt4ahome.co.uk it was designed by an estate agent who was fed up with high costs. 25+VAT GBP per month, per office - forever. Written into a contract, will never change - EVER. It generates enough for advertising costs (it's not free) and it's got all the features as the other sites. Even number of clicks graphed, integration with google maps, sun rise/set predictor, everything. Just need more agents to know about it and sign up. |

Get Profile | PropertyIndex.com is a pay for results property portal established by a privately funded group of internet entrepreneurs with a proven track record of success. Over 900 overseas agents have been using the service for a year, and we now have over 2000 UK estate agents signed up. We charge £1 for buyer leads, and £5 for vendor leads. If the lead proves uncontactable, you can dispute it and not pay. No monthly subscription, no minimum term contracts. Even our premium positions are available on a CPC basis rather than tenancy. Our extensive research into the market has proved that this is the fairest and most sustainable business model (you don't have to look any further than Google to substantiate this fact). |

Get Profile | Globrix is frying pan to fire, in my opinion. Try getting them to confirm that the site will remain free of listing, "click through" or pay per lead charges. They won't - even if you ask them for a 6 month guarantee. They'll go to pay per click/lead as soon as they've sufficiently damaged Rightmove. |

Get Profile | everyone dumps Rightmove which should be a no brainer and then Globrix start charging and we are back to square one. I would rather have a paper taking my money than another agent but until all agents do a site run by and for agents whereby any profits go to charity then we will keep getting herded around. the NAEA site isnt the answer either. we have just left them as they are full of middle aged estate agents doing car treasure hunts and dont actually help anyone coming into or already in the business. |

Get Profile | In the end - it is Joe Public who will decide which is the best Internet Property web site or sites to use. There are far too many web sites claiming to be better than anyone else. To date, Rightmove have the absolute monopoly - they know it hence their dictatorial attitude. |

Activate your own new website at www.thebu2iness.com which will give you your own website, and will upload to any of the main portals you want it to, inc Rightmove, FAP, Globrix and PropertyLive, all completely free.
