Here is proof that Rightmove has taken over the world – not that you needed it: ‘Rightmove’ has become a more frequently used search term than ‘property’.

According to Google statistics – for the technically minded, its Insights for Search Tool – this modern day miracle happened during the week ending May 22.

For shallow people like EAT’s editor, it’s a bit like typing in ‘Manolo Blahnik’ instead of ‘shoes’. Or for EAT’s office junior, ‘Wisden’ rather than ‘cricket’.

‘Rightmove’ started 2010 with a score of 71 compared to a score of 89 for ‘property’.

The gap between the search terms has narrowed over the course of the year with both terms drawing level by the week ending May 15.

Rightmove then edged ahead with a score of 98 compared with 94 for ‘property’, and has maintained the lead since.

As well as being a more popular search term than ‘property’, ‘Rightmove’ came on top in search popularity over all other related terms, including ‘properties’, ‘homes’ and ‘houses’.

Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, comments: “To get to a stage where consumers now place your name first in their search behaviour is a notable achievement and a real sign of the strength of our online brand.”

Rightmove has market share of 83% amongst the top four property websites, according to Hitwise measurement of page impressions. Last week’s Google Insight data shows the next highest property portal, Zoopla, has an overall score of 5 as a search word, compared with Rightmove’s top score of 98.

Meanwhile the 40% without a PC (Government figures, if you belive them)buy how?

And of the 60% how many want to use the PC to buy a property or should I say know how to?

IT is given far too much credit for property selling. I is a part but not the holy grail.

Okay, lets end this, lets all cast our minds back a hundred years ago when the web was a new thing, all these new web businesses were telling estate agency directors / owners like me that they will put us out of business, it was to be the new way etc etc, then all the UK’s big agents sat down together for the first time ever and created Rightmove, on day 1 it had content the others could only dream of and almost every estate agents office on every high street had Rightmove in the window, on boards, letter hear etc - the beast was born and it was agents that brought it into the world.

Its posher better looking, but less successful twin, primelocation came about the same way, remember project Hamburg? The one all the blue bloods brought into so they didn’t have to be in bed with Countrywide etc.

RM is an example of what our industry can do when it gets its head out of its arse.

Tim you don’t ask for the £20 you just get them to pay for the bubbly when you pick the cheque up from them. Though its cheap stuff they get nothing quality like a piper-heidsieck but that don’t matter most gets wasted ;)

aths... Its a bit like winning the lottery, all 6 numbers, collecting your millions, then asking for your £20 because 6 numbers means you also had 3 numbers twice, 2 lots of £10.

RM are most used portal by a huge margin, who cares how some of the stragglers arrive there.

Jon not wanting to get drawn into a debate on the usage of Google as alternative to web browser address bar or accused of steeling this thread I entering AskTheHomeSearch in Google and hitting search will return a number of pages with just our results in were as Rightmove is only the first 2 or 3 on there name rest relate to articles on other sites and indeed some other sites that the name rightmove is part of check it out yes if you type askthe in the search bar the first thing that is displayed is probably some thing like AskTheBuilder.com but that’s not the search term you are looking for if you enter right in the search bar right move will not come up as first on list either.
And at the end of the day an some may accuse me of shooting my own foot here but just trying to make a point is clients are searching on Google first why not just search Google for the property and thus agents list on Google instead of paying rightmove to market your listings which should include making the public aware of there website address at the end of the day why have a shop if no one know were it is located the rightmove website is just the same its there shop front and as they are stocking your goods would should you not expect them to make sure the clients know were to go shop? Not have to get directions.

Perhaps all of you that moan constantly about RM (yet still upload to it) will now draw a line under it and shut up

??? I have not given any detrimental comments about any one on this post???.
INTRESTING my point exactly the terms return the same results so why what is the boast about putting in RightMove as the search term returning the results is and not attempting a plug here you enter AskTheHomeSearch in Google you will get results returned for ATHS in the same way.
You are entitled to your own views on AskTheHomeSearch just as I am entitled to express my views and make comment. The article and subsequent posts have not been to discuss the company or site but the usage of Google and subsequent claim that the new word for Property is now RigthMove.
Does this mean that all the Property Agents will now rebrand as RightMove Agents was the point of the post the search term returns RightMove just like it would if Zoopla was put in or Findaproperty or any other site.
Guess its my turn again this week for the stick was poor Chris last week in another post made one comment then all hell was unleashed on him got to be some one I suppose but I am thick skinned and here to stay.

Jake - how on earth can opening up a search engine, typing the name of what youalready know you want, then having to click again at least once to get the page you are seeking possibly be quicker than typing in the correct URL in the first instance?

??? - May I suggest you read ATHS's post again. I saw no 'slagging off' of Rightmove as you put it - just a point of view being put forward. Your own post, however, was full of it. Oops, sorry - missed out a couple of letters there...

ATHS - I've just searched all the terms you suggested on Google (roperty for sale, house for sale, home for sale, home search) - Rightmove is the first listing for ALL of those terms.

Ask the home search, how on earth do you think you are going to gain any credibility buy slagging off a website that has spent years creating a brand which is (and always will be in my opinion) a gazillion times better than yours. All be it they are not everybody's favourtie company at the moment. You must be completely dilusional if you think your excuse for a website is ever going to make any sort of impact on the market. Maybe you should spend more time and effort on your own website rather than on here posting riduculous comments. You are clearly an idiot. (and i have never or have any intention of working for anyone involved in rightmove, i am just realistic).

Rightmove has great brand awareness. I have to say that some people on here dont have a clue. millions of peoplr everyday use a search engine rather than putting in the full web address. I know i do as it is quicker.

That is why there is a dedicated website to the global portal market www.propertyportalwatch.com and no it’s nothing to do with me :)
After all I have not found any spelling errors on the site :)

what is even more intresting that these portal 'news posts' seem to attract more comments than any other topic

Wardy it has finally happened we agree :) property for sale, house for sale, home for sale, home search (no plug intended) are terms most home hunters would enter if looking for a new home or property. When was the last time a prospective purchaser walked in to a branch an said i am looking for a RightMove.

I find it intresting that anyone with a basic knowlage of a search engine would type 'property' in to goggle. Surely people understand that you have to be more specific than that to return anything relevant? 'property for sale' would be a better comparison.

I think this has highlighted a much more interesting anthropological trend. The laziness of browsing. I have often seen people type facebook into google in exactly the same way. It highlights more about Google's dominance than Rightmove's.

Also, these stats do not include those who have the site bookmarked or went straight to it. Only the ones who used Google.

atsh, most people are too lazy to enter the full url and risk putting .com instead of .co.uk. So they use Google. The point is people are searching and finding. Petty to argue how they are searching.

    Ajax. Well said.

When will the agents who made RM the force that it is by, in addition to actually paying RM, they nearly all advertise the site for FREE in all of their own ads, details. letterheads and websites etc. etc. If the NNoPP agents did the same for their own PopertyLive site by showing the PL logo etc. in the same way it would soon make at least some inroads. Of course they could not entirely drop RM now and may never be able to do so. But look out for higher and higher subscriptions.

So people have to go on Google to search for the Rightmove sight hmmm says a lot about brand awareness and how the public find the website address the search term used Rightmove is at 98% for the search term Rightmove so this means the 98% means people did not know how to get onto the Rightmove website without searching for the site via Google instead of going direct to the site if I was Rightmove I would not be proud of this it means a large number of people do not know there web address!!!!
You could have been entering any search term this does not associate Rightmove with a search for property it just means a large number of people have entered Rightmove in Google and searched the could of just as well entered Moveright or Move or Right or any other term even Propertylive returns results. Channel4 and BBC even return some results associated with property do we have to now take it that this mean the BBC are now a Property search site.
The fact Rightmove is such a high search term should be viewed as a failing by Righmove in that people have to search for a way to get onto the site to find the listings agents have paid Rightmove to promote. People knowing the name Rightmove is down to the fact Agent have promoted the term and brand on there marketing material and branch windows for years. So the term is associated with property yes but the marketing material does not include a website address for users to access the site.
It’s a bit like an agent having a great property that a lot of people want and then not giving out the address to anyone to view it.

Any idea how many page impressions there are for PropertyLive? Or hasn't it made an impression with the great house hunting public?

So that's where all the traffic goes.
